I'm wondering about what the intended or best way to use the alternate prompts might be. They're numbered, so it's very tempting to just give them a go , but then I'm not sure how to treat the alternate first prompt or the alternate endings. The instructions say "save your original prompt page and use one of these in place of that number". I'm not sure exactly how that's intended. Maybe we get to prompt 32, and it feels like too much of a curveball (32 is always like that for me) or we've had it a couple games in a row, and we just decide we want something else? So then we flip to the Alternate Prompts and just peruse them until we find something we like? And of course when we roll the dice we jump from our saved position at 32. Is that about right? Seems pretty indulgent!

I'm tempted to do some reordering and see if I can't make the alternate prompts feel time-appropriate like the main list.

(+1)

Randomly swapping out an alternate for an over-used primary Prompt is pretty much the idea.  There's no required way to do that, rolling is fine or whateve.r

An absolutely heartwrenching game about the passing of ages. It's even great to play if you have any interest in immortals in general, just mentally gloss over the vampire stuff as that's not as important as the idea that all memories turn to dust in the end. Depending on rolls and creativity, you could play a Scottish highlander who gets unceremoniously offed within the first century of his life, an Ancient Egyptian warrior who ultimately leads his kind to rule the world, or a Regency dandy who makes himself mortal in the modern era only to contract the 'Rona. So many ways to play, and all you truly need is the game and something to write with.

If you're still 'um'ing and 'ah'ing about buying it, watch Dicebreaker on Youtube livestream it. They'll show you how to play multiplayer, which is possible with this.

I never thought about using it in a multiplayer session, this is awesome, thanks!

Incredible. Just when I thought I had seen everything from the single-player RPG genre, here comes a gorgeous game with novel mechanics that helps you tell unique vampire stories. I've watched as my vampire turned into a mole-like monster and burrowed for centuries beneath the dirt. I've had ancient Greek vampires forget everyone they knew and then be trapped forever.

The book itself is an artifact I will treasure forever.

A burrowing mole vampire sounds amazing!

Hi Tim, I just picked your game. Incredible stuff. Do you have any tracks or albums you'd recommend to put on a Thousand Year Old Vampire playlist?

(+1)

ooooh, that's a good one.

The game was written under the influence of the two Tubeway Army albums.  They were just on repeat pretty much the whole time, mixed in with some other new wave stuff.  Maybe the Black Mass album by Mort Garson, too.  But those aren't a play list, and I can't add much more!

(1 edit)

I made a Spodify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1MvdOgZ4VDUw3EKz9EVrCt?si=xWZurH3YQdqwko1udfXq...). It's a hodgepodge of stuff that I think fits the theme of the game. It's more meant to be put on shuffle and play in the background while writing. I'm also not quite finished adding songs to the list.

I'm glad the Mort Garson stuff made it on there!

May I share this on the twitter?

Sure, but it's very much a work in progress right now. I'm also a cast member on the Technical Difficulties Gaming Podcast. I'd appreciate it if you could say that Ben from @techdiffgp made the playlist.

Hi folks, we're a bricks and mortar store based in the UK, and we have books coming from Tim! If you'd like to order one through us you can! The link is here... https://www.3rdspacegaming.co.uk/products/thousand-year-old-vampire-us-edition
Cheers, Jonathan

Hi Tim, I have a shipping update question. Ordered 2 copies back in June on the 1st printing and haven't received my physical copies yet, can you provide an update? Thanks!

Email me your, uh, email and shipping info at dearleadergame@gmail.com.  I'll check.

I REALLY wanted to buy this in physical form but I live in EU so I can't really afford shipping. Maybe one day I will buy it anyway, in the meantime I'm going to download the community copy. BTW is the community copy a full copy of the book? Seems too good to be true!

Order it through 3rd Space Games in the UK.  It'll be somewhat cheaper.  Or email me in December at dearleadergame@gmail.com

The community copy is the same as what paying folks get.  Everybody should have games.

3rd space games copies are sold out, guess I'll mail you in december :D

Email 'em.

Email 'em.

Hey there! Our pre-orders are now open. Here... Linky

Tried to order 4 copies to Germany - unfortunately it seems the only option then it "local pickup", which makes no sense.

That doesn't make any sense at all.  Go order through thousandyearoldvampire.com.  Email me at dearleadergame@gmail.com if that doesn't work.

Sorry about that. I've had a look and it seems we didn't tell the checkout what to do at the next level up in shipping weight so it reverted to the default. Hopefully Tim has you covered, but I didn't like to leave such an irritating mystery unsolved!

J

I really want to buy this POD from Drivethru (as I'm european, the printed version is cost prohibitive for me) - but the POD isn't working? Do you know what's going on?

Yeah, there was something screwed up with the POD file causing a gross error and when they came back to me to fix it they then requested a level of color management above and beyond the default.  It made a minor fix into a big fix.

I didn't think there was enough of a demand for a POD version to really worry about it, so I pushed it to the back burner.

Email dearleadergame@gmail.com in early December and we'll talk about this.

(+1)

Thanks for the reply! I'll definately get back to you.

Hello! I ordered the $15 pdf, but I haven't been charged yet, and it says the files are pending in the email. Is that right? When will things be "locked down"?

I have no idea!  That's all a new one on me.

Contact support@itch.io and take a free Community Copy in the meantime.

Sounds good :)

let me know how it turns out.

Hm.. I purchased through Backerkit, does that make a difference?

Oh, that's good to know.  You should've gotten it through BK immediately.  Still, get a CC here until it gets figured out.

Hi there. I bought a digital copy and would like a physical version too. Are there any plans to sell the book through retail stores as shipping to me is too dear.

Retail stores can buy it wholesale through IPR or Blackbox (or me directly).  Tell your local folks that you want it!

Hi tim,

I'm keen to buy but am living in France at the moment. Backerkit are charging $37 for shipping which seems way over priced. Can you please have a chat with the distributor and ask them why they are charging such high prices? Also, can you tell me if you will be distributing the book through other platforms, such as Amazon.

thanks

That's the actual cost of shipping, unfortunately.  It's sent Fedex, regular post would be about 5usd cheaper but take four weeks or more.

Thanks Tim. A brilliant and elegant "game" that is probably the best of its kind. Just amazing. It was worth the wait!

Thank you!

I really hate to add myself to the list of people pestering you for shipping updates, but I would really appreciate some reassurance that my order is actually in the pipeline somewhere.

I don't see an order under this username for itch.  Email me your order email and shipping address at dearleadergame@gmail.com.

Is it possible that you pre-ordered on Backerkit?  That won't ship until late Octo/Nov.

Is there a best way to find the status of the order? It seems like the best way to find out if there is an issue is to ask here.

Hmmmm.  Something mysterious is going on with the itch interface and I don't see you.  Send your purchase email and mailing address to dearleadergame@gmail.com.

I would like to poke test my book too (....that doesn't sound as family approved without the accompanying video). When should we expect the rest of them to ship?

Oh shit, I looked yours up and there's an issue.  I'll email you.

(1 edit) (+5)

I’m still unsure if it’s really here but it’s passed the poke test so I’m prepared to accept the reality at least until further testing (more pokes).

(+2)

Jeez don't make it mad.

Do NOT poke happy fun ball!

Though I suppose since it is a boo...ARGH Its got my neck!

No!!  The fangs, the fa...

<lights up bat signal, book returns to maker>

Just wanna say that now that I finally have my book, it is a fantastic piece of work. Visually, creatively and mechanically!

The warehouse debacle was pretty irritating but I'm glad I waited it out. Thanks for all your hard work Tim!

I made it look better by building up desire and drama with the warehouse ruse.  In a few weeks you'll realize it's a poorly photocopies pamphlet.

Its here and beautiful! Cant wait to dive into it this weekend. It really is a gorgeous book. You have been great Tim and thanks for crafting such an awesome thing and sharing it with us!

Thank you so much!  The book is made of congealed time, about two months a book.  Hence the wait.

My book arrived this week and I can’t say enough how Tim’s frequent (and frequently distraught) updates kept me in good spirits while I waited.

I can't wait to find new things to mildly disappoint you with.

I received an email last week saying my book was shipped, but it only contains an order number. Since then, no news, and I paid extra for fast shipping...

Does anyone know their tracking url?

I sent you a tracking number just now.  Check the email you bought the game with.

is it possible to also get a tracking number as well. Just to double check at least that they did send it to the correct country.  It took a amusing amount of emails to get them to get both the correct street AND country so I wouldn’t be surprised if some postman is walking around Norfolk with my book rather than Norway.

I sent a tracking number to your email using dearleadergame@gmail.com

(+3)

People!  Get this!  I ordered twelve copies of TYOV for myself just so I can have them on hand.  My order arrived today and there was ONE copy in the box.  Not twelve.

Ha!

(+3)

I'm going to write myself a friendly but stern letter.

(+1)

One of us! One of us!

(+1)

this is horrible.  i don't like this.

(+1)

you should demand you refund yourself immediately! As someone who lets themselves down regularly I’ll say you can’t let yourself get away with this. Give your self a inch and you’ll take a mile.

I haven't replied to my first email yet.  What do I do?

maybe bribery will get it sorted, surprise yourself with a home cooked meal?

I'd be afraid I'd poison me.

Out of the blue a box showed up with your wonderful book in it! Thanks Tim for keeping us (me) entertained and up to date with all the chaos.

(+1)

I hope it jumped out and yelled "BOO!"

(1 edit)

Unfortunately it looks like my copy was mailed into the ether. It was shipped to an incomplete address, marked as delivered and has zero accountability. Blackbox authorized it to be delivered without a signature and to be placed outside. So it was just dropped off...somewhere in the city. I can't follow up on it either as the delivery notice was also delivered to oblivion. So... my book's gone before it even arrived. Sigh.

Edit: Irony of this is that I got the email confirmation from blackbox saying "here's where we're shipping it" which was the correct address, only for them to circumvent their own confirmation and then ship to a different address.

(+1)

Oh that's ridiculous (of Blackbox, not you)!  Email me about this at dearleadergame@gmail.com.  Include the screenshots of the different addresses if you don't mind.

I've emailed you the details. Let's see what blackbox has to say, though my expectations of them are exceedingly low.

As mad as I've been about their nonsense with the delay, they have been super good about dealing with problems in the past.  If you can't find it you'll be getting another book super soon.

Hopefully it doesn't come down to that. It's a shame that blackbox is marring this experience so severely. I don't blame you for their faults but to say I'm displeased with the fulfillment center's handling of this situation would be an egregious understatement. Thanks to your prompt, same day response, I'm willing to wait further.

The book arrived today, against all odds, even though it was delivered to oblivion itself. My guess is that the capricious horrors beyond the veil of space and time returned the book to fedex so it could be delivered to the proper (corporeal) address.

(+2)

The ritual worked.

(+1)

Holy shit, a book showed up in my mailbox today! 74 days from order to arrival. That's only about 0.02% of a thousand years, so still plenty of time to enjoy. Looking forward to playing with the physical copy, Tim!

Clearly this is an elaborate Blackbox trick.  Don't fall for it.

At what point should we worry if we haven't received a shipping notice?

(+1)

For whatever unfair reason yours is just in the "packed" stage.  Which I guess is better than "on fire" but not by much.

(+1)

“Build a man a fire, and he'll be warm for a day. Set a man on fire, and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.”

― Terry Pratchett, Jingo

I shall be patient ^_^

Now that the books were shipped, what's  the ETA?

(+1)

a few people got them in three days, others seven.  but i'm not sure.  this is a new warehouse and things are different.

So I guess an estimate of about a week is a good one.

(+1)

That seems fair!~

(+1)

So - apparently my order was shipped, but with part of my adress missing. I wrote them back about it, but havent heard anything. I REALLY hope that its just an email mistake, since the first time they wrote me, they had my full adress, but on the actual shipping mail, my floor and side numbers were missing.

Just thought you should know.

Thanks for letting me know!  Track the book and if things go askew then we'll figure it out.

Sure - Sadly, I can't track it. I tried by googling blackbox shipping, and found what I think is their tracking. I entered the number, and my email adress, and it found nothing.

(1 edit) (+1)

Dear lord - this is delivered by Fedex - They are completely unreachable by phone. They left a message on my door at home that they had been there. This was FINAL NOTICE and I had to contact them to make a new schedule. So, I tried rescheduling, but they will ONLY deliver on weekdays and I am at work then?

So I tried to redirect the adress, but then it said the delivery would be delivered at 6 Pm instead? Meaning, I was at home at that time.

I've been on hold with Fedex for 23 minutes and for 41 minutes on two calls now, and they don't pick up.

I don't think a Thousand Years will be enough to get the book to me... :-/

edit: Oh, their chat function also disconnects me without fail...

Gah!  I'm so sorry!  Email me at dearleadergame@gmail.com

Hey - today I managed to get a hold of a real person. So, hopefully they will deliver the package at my workplace to morrow! I'll let you know.

The book is getting more and more worth, in terms of storytelling, with this kind of beginning :-D

Oh, and sorry if I sounded upset - its not your fault and I'm sure we'll figure it out!

I don't think its a mistake, my book was "Delivered" to oblivion yesterday. It was delivered to a location without an address. Blackbox approved release without a signature or any accountability so... it's gone into the ether.

Just got a shipping noticification from blackbox for my copy... of an older version of it... umm...

I hesitate to ask... but are there major differences between that version (1.4 I think), and the current one? I mean... content-wise?

layout mistakes and typos were fixed.  a few minor bits of scribbly art were added.  The biggest mistake in the first printing no one even noticed.

Hi I saw your comments about orders after like june 26 ~ being stuck in shipping. Mine was just a couple days after that so I understand the wait. However, I noticed several people were getting your updates on the shipping  situation via email.  the only email I received about this order was about itch losing my delivery address or something and instructions on how to update the order through itch, as well as several about the Ennies. Is there a way I can sign up for the shipping update emails somewhere?

Please resend your address to dearleadergame@gmail.com and I'll make sure everything is in order.

(thank you for checking in)

Okay will do thanks!

Popping in really late to say I did get mine a while back! Its in great condition and i absolutely love the game so far

Awesome!

I have a tracking number and my book's in NJ!  Check your email, people!

The book starts in NJ, I think, so don't get too excited yet.  (But yeah, they're arriving places)

Got it today.  My partner loves it!  I got this for her birthday back in July.

A little longer and it'd arrived in time for next birthday.

Mini-update:  A whole bunch of stuff moved from "transmitted" to "packed".

Everything, I think.  I mean, the stuff that hasn't been shipped.

"Packed" is a new tag, as far as I know.  I don't think I ever saw it before the move.  Maybe it's something specific to this new warehouse or it could be that a fully functional warehouse moves so quickly that the Packed tab is never around long enough to be seen.

A few more things were marked as shipped.  There's a pattern of a sort in what is getting moved out but it's not worth going into.

I got an email from the fulfillment folks saying that my book are their priority right now.  I've been practicing a whole new set of dramatic gesticulations so I'm ready if the stuff ain't shipping this week.

Update:  a handful of random things moved from "packed" to "shipped".

Update:  about a third of the packages have been moved to "shipped".

Can report that I just got my Blackbox "shipped" email! Super excited to have it next week!

Not me yet *tears*

(+1)

That's unfortunate. When I saw the email it didn't even phase me even though I've checked constantly for weeks now lol. Hopefully yours comes soon though!

You have a tracking number issued!  Look in your spam filters.

I picture a frazzled warehouse employee hunched over a work table in a completely empty warehouse, frantically pasting scraps of newspaper, phonebooks, and old photographs into empty composition books, hoping that the customers won't notice.

Hahah! I like it

(+2)

I laughed out loud at this.  A sad, hollow laugh that trailed into tears.

(1 edit)

Not sure where to post or mail you with this but i found a typo on page XXII under the section about playing the game tips

"Be uncomfortable.
Your protagonist is a vampire,
even if you try to keep them
decent and humane. Terrible
and delicious things are going
to happen. You shouldhave
moments of discomfort"

"Shouldhave" should be two words.

Hope this helps, I am enjoying reading and am patiently awaiting  my physical book!

Edit: Just wanted to add that I had backed and then backed out of the initial KS, wish I hadn't but money was a thing that kept me from being able to stay in.  I'm glad i was able to revisit and finally get my hands on a copy.  Thanks.

That's a good catch!  I'd been alerted to it in time to get a corrected PDF to the printer, fortunately.  No idea how that crept into the text because it wasn't on the first printing and I don't think I adjusted anything on that page.

Hi Tim! When I saw your message that the books finally arrived in the warehouse, I figured that I was golden. However, I'm moving and September 7th will be the last day at my current address. With the shipments taking longer than expected, is there anything that can be done? I'm worried that Murphy's Law is going to show up and I'll miss my shipment by a day or two. Thanks!

Send me your new address at dearleadergame@gmail.com

Yeah, they are having some hang time before actually shipping.  A little is okay but too much is a belly ache.

Just chiming in that I got an initial Blackbox email and despite it saying they were shipping me a copy of the book, it said it was free--and I never got a shipping notification. So, I'm slightly worried that something is off.

(+1)

It looks like the boxes are going out the door slower than expected.  They make up that first email when the label is ready and I guess they send the next one when it goes out the door

(+1)

Gotcha! Well I won't be too bothered about wondering if it'll be there when I get home or not then lol. Hopefully that second email comes soon!

Well, I got one email from them - 5 days ago, and thats it. No sent confirmation.  Is this normal?

(1 edit) (+2)

It might be.  They usually take about a week to get a big Kickstarter shipment out, and I dumped a LOT of orders on them at once.  If we are being generous two of those days were a weekend.

But:  One of the random games I checked had a delivery date estimate on it Monday and now it doesn't.  So it seems like they might have rolled back a step or something.

I don't think we need to be worried yet, but I know I'm feeling impatient.

EDIT:  They haven't sent your package yet, just to be clear.

(+1)

Thanks Tim! So close now, and I was getting a bit anxious :-D

I got the first Blackbox email, but no shipping notification either (yet)

(+1)

It looks like the boxes are going out the door slower than expected.  They make up that first email when the label is ready and I guess they send the next one when it goes out the door.

(+1)

Thanks! Never know with blackbox ^_^

I don't know if my order slipped through the cracks... I've also been waiting since June and didn't receive any update or confirmation.

I have a question, I had ordered a solid copy sometime in early June, Although I did not put in some information at first so it did not work,  I did end up putting in the information, It may be a delay in shipping or something but I have not got the Solid copy yet, if possible can you Provide some information to why? (Its ok if you don't have any information though)

Oh that's weird.  I can see your info when I export all the customer information but I can't see it on the site's web interface.  Somehow you fell through a crack and I apologize.  Your timing, however, is excellent in that there was a huge warehouse delay and everything only shipped today anyways.

I'm putting in a shipping request that'll go out Monday.  If your address has changed since June please let me know ASAP.

Thank you so much!

you bet!

Okay, it looks like all the orders are going out today!

I got the email from them that said my order was received, but that's it. I still haven't received any notification of shipping. Do I need to be worried?

I think that's good.  Not all the orders have gone out but they are "transmitted".  Do you have a tracking number on there?

They did not provide a tracking number, but they did give me an "order number".

Their message indicates I should receive another email, but I have not yet. I likely just need to remain patient.

"We've received your order from This Machine Games. We'll send you another email once your order ships."

I just emailed you your tracking number.  It's not active yet.  I guess they are rolling the orders out of the warehouse slower than they used to--not unreasonable since they just moved but it is frustrating.
